DIGITALISATION OF THE YARD LOGISTICS:
STANDARDISED HGV FLOW MANAGEMENT WITH
YARD MANAGEMENT FOR THIRD PARTY HGVs

Waiting HGVs increasingly pose huge challenges for our scrap yard logistics. The parking lot and road are full of vehicles that have either arrived unannounced or at the wrong time and which fail to make optimal use of the scarce space available. When they arrive at the site, the speed at which their load is processed is largely dependent on the drivers themselves. At the driver registration office (HGV Check-In, Harkortstrasse 17) that was set up for this purpose, HGV drivers are now guided through the process defined by Yard Management in a logical and user-friendly manner.

The user interface for the logistics terminal is available in various different languages: The driver simply selects their chosen language on the welcome screen that is displayed on the touchscreen monitor and is then guided through the subsequent screens. The system asks them whether they are entering or exiting and for information on the freight forwarding company, driver and vehicle licence plate. The multilingual screens always have a simple design so that they can be easily understood by the drivers. Pictogram and graphics are used instead of text. The user interface is available in German and also in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Czech and Croatian.

After completing the registration process, the driver is issued with a pager. This allows us to page drivers in a coordinated manner when they are required, no matter where they are currently located. The pager system was tested in advance over a period of one year and has now been adapted and expanded to include a total of 35 pagers. An information board shows drivers whether they have registered correctly and their position in the queue.

The registered HGVs are then displayed in the LOGIS software application. This information can not only be viewed by the weighing station personnel but also in the yard manager’s office so that he/she can better coordinate the yard logistics. The new self-service SWB logistic terminal from OAS allows us to make our operating procedures for the registration of drivers significantly more efficient. The result is a quick and effective process – both for the driver and for our personnel.
